Bob (also called Bob version 2.0 or Bob-1, serial number SOL-1) is the only original replicant of the human Robert Johansson. Created in a FAITH facility in New Handletown (the location of the city previously known as Portland), Bob was loaded into a replicant matrix from Heaven-1 after being identified as the final contestant.

Bob 2.0 comes to consciousness in a FAITH facility in New Handletown. Bob meets a researcher named Landers who is running the replicant project for FAITH, paid for and administered by the Ministry of Truth. Landers is evaluating Bob against four other candidates for who will be selected for the project, which initially Landers does not give much detail on. Landers runs Bob through a series of tests to demonstrate his mental stability, ability to manage his new hardware, and his willingness to follow instructions.
After several attempts to destroy the facility by rival nations and dissenting groups within FAITH, Bob is loaded into the Heaven-1 spaceship. During pre-launch planning Bob receives a message from Landers, of which the first word in the message is 'missiles'. Bob, running at a heightened speed, initiates launch and starts evasive maneuvers before Landers' message even finishes, starting his journey into the stars.
