Pre-war Politics[]
When Bob 2.0 awakens in 2133, significant changes in geopolitics have taken place while he was cryogenically frozen. The planet is now dominated by several superpowers:
The Free American Independent Theocratic Hegemony (F.A.I.T.H.)[]
Main page: FAITH
The theocracy that used to be the United States is in control of all of North America, except for Washington State, British Columbia, and Alaska.
United States of Eurasia (the USE)[]
An alliance that includes all of Europe and most of western Russia. The USE was a leader in AMI technology and had a wealth of financial resources. Their project to create an interstellar probe was in competition with FAITH's Project Heaven, and made them a suspect in any attempt to sink Project Heaven, including the attack on the Applied Synergetics research facility and the attack on the first HEAVEN probe prior to its scheduled launch.
The Australian Federation[]
Their project to create an interstellar probe was in competition with FAITH's Project Heaven, and made them a suspect in any attempt to sink Project Heaven, including the attack on the Applied Synergetics research facility and the attack on the first HEAVEN probe prior to its scheduled launch. In fact, FAITH had stolen the plans for the Australian probe, which had been developed by Vickers. FAITH copied these plans exactly to create HEAVEN-1. Australia later launched their own probe, controlled by the replicant Henry Roberts.
Republic of Africa[]
No details are given about this organization, other than Bob's implication that it is a loose political alliance rather than a true Republic.
Brazilian Empire[]
Their approach to international relations was characterized as belligerent and adversarial. Their project to create an interstellar probe was in competition with FAITH's Project Heaven, and made them a suspect in any attempt to sink Project Heaven, including the attack on the Applied Synergetics research facility and the attack on the first HEAVEN probe prior to its scheduled launch. They later launched several armed probes controlled by multiple replicants, including up to three probes controlled by the replicant Major Ernesto Medeiros.
China[]
China controlled not only its historical territory but also most of eastern Russia, and many "satellite countries" in Southeast Asia. Their project to create an interstellar probe was in competition with FAITH's Project Heaven, and made them a suspect in any attempt to sink Project Heaven, including the attack on the Applied Synergetics research facility and the attack on the first HEAVEN probe prior to its scheduled launch. They launched their own probe controlled by an AMI, which would later be captured by The Others.
Global tensions are high as Bob is uploaded into his HEAVEN vessel. He successfully avoids a sneak attack and views the beginning of the First Battle of Sol in his rearview mirror as he escapes the system for Epsilon Eridani.
Global War[]
When Riker and Homer return to Sol from Epsilon Eridani in 2157, they discover a planet ravaged by war. The Brazilian Empire initiated a nuclear attack on FAITH, China and others have bombarded the Brazilian empire, and an ecological collapse has begun. The Bobs determine that the ecosystem is devolving uncontrollably into nuclear winter. They catch Captain Matias Araujo, the replicant controlling six Brazilian probes, in the act of pulling four asteroids into a collision course with China. They defeat Araujo in The Second Battle of Sol.
Post-war Survival[]
Only fifteen million humans survive the global war. They congregate into several settlements, or enclaves. Riker contacts each one and convenes the representatives of all the enclaves into a New United Nations beginning in 2158. Due to the dire situation of the planet, Riker and Homer begin planning to evacuate as many of the survivors as they can, and take them to systems that they hope the other Bobs will soon discover. Their mantra is “1500 ships, or 1500 trips”, since each colony ship can hold 10,000 humans in stasis pods.
Augsberg, Germany[]
The remnants of the USE are led by Colonel Butterworth.
Florianopolis, Brazil[]
The southern tip of Brazil was spared direct bombardment during the war, and the survivors of the Brazilian Empire took refuge there.
New Zealand[]
Survivors from here and Australia were settled somewhere the island. Their delegate to the UN is Ambassador Gerald.
Spitsbergen[]
This island is located in the Arctic Ocean, in the Svalbard archipelago. It is home to a group of survivors that control the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, which they would later use to their advantage. "The Spits," as the Bobs often called them, were led by Goodman Walter (pronounced val▪ter).
San Diego[]
The FAITH survivors are led by Minister Cranston. Among them are members of Robert Johannson's family, including his sister Andrea's three-times-great granddaughter, Julia Hendricks.
The Maldives[]
This island in the Indian Ocean has a favorable climate and possesses a wealth of resources. It is represented in the UN by Minister Sharma, a level-headed and intelligent leader.
Vancouver Island[]
No details are given about the enclave, only that their leader's name is Campbell, and that the survivors are recolonized in 82 Eridani on planet Asgard.
Japan[]
No details are given about the enclave, only that their leader's name is Katsu Ito, and that the survivors are recolonized in 82 Eridani on planet Takamagahara.
Cuba[]
No details are given about the Cuban enclave, except that there are 150,000 people living there when it is irradiated during the Battle of Terra.
North Africa[]
This enclave is mentioned in All These Worlds ch. 36, but its precise location is not given. Its UN delegate is Representative Hubert.
The Battle of Terra[]
Main Page: The Third Battle of Sol
In 2227, The Others launch an expedition to harvest the Sol system. Upon their arrival in 2257, the Bobs mount a defense. They successfully protect the planet, although not without casualties - both humans and replicants.
Reclamation & Terraforming[]
Bob makes an emotional pilgrimage home in 2263 after leaving Delta Eridani. Harvey provides him with a manny, and he visits the former site of Las Vegas, which is buried under glaciers.
Charles and other Bobs begin terraforming the planet, to shorten the ice age and to repopulate the ecosystem with now-extinct life forms, harvesting DNA from samples found on the planet and from the Svalbard Seed Vault.
The reclamation crew halts the ice age brought on by the nuclear winter caused by the global war, and fifty percent of the planet is now ice free. The terraforming also includes restoring native flora and fauna using cloning techniques. The Bobs collect DNA samples and plan to restore almost 98% of all native species to the planet, including some species that had gone extinct before the war.
SURGE mover plates are being used to change the magnetic fields and gravity of the Moon, Mars, and Venus, in order to terraform those bodies as well.
