It was founded in 2041 CE after a coup launched by fundamentalist Christians. The coup was launched to overthrow the first (and only) atheist President, Desmond Ahern.
Background[]
In 2036, the US elected as President a fundamentalist Christian named Andrew Handel with extreme right-wing policies. Among these policies, Handel tried to ban the election of non-Christians to any government post and tried to abolish the constitutional separation of church and state. In addition, Handel's cabinet was stocked based on religious conviction and not necessarily actual qualification. The government was focused entirely on developing and enforcing far-right legislation.
Underneath Handel an extreme economic recession developed (described by Dr Landers as making the Great Recession "look like a picnic"). In response, the US elected its first atheist president. Shortly after Ahern was inaugurated, he was overthrown in a coup by the newly founded FAITH.
"The official history doesn't mention Ahearn or the coup at all, and Handel is credited with being voted in after running on a platform of creating a theocracy. And just so you know, Bob, criticism of the government is a felony, punishable by, er, re-education." (20)
History[]
FAITH controlled much of the previous US territory from 2041 through the 2100's. Upon the arrival of Riker and Homer to Sol in 2157, Minister Kranston controls the remnants of FAITH on Earth.
In 2171 the FAITH colony was evacuated from Sol on the colony ship Exodus 3 leaving towards Omicron Eridani. Howard oversees the settlement of FAITH on Romulus.
In 2198 Minister Kranston is removed from office after some "compromising photographs" were released and the new colony decides to separates church from state once again.
