Hugh is the Skippy representative who participates directly in the rescue of Bender. Hugh is a descendant of Bill. He is an earlier generation of replicant than the other Skippies, which is the reason why the other Skippies select him to represent them with The Ancient Ones.
He uses the nickname Hugh with the earlier generation Bobs, but prefers to use a designation, which is akin to an IP address, as is the custom of the Skippies faction of Bobs.
Hugh wears a nondescript, gray coverall.
His VR environment is a representation of JOVAH. It is a flat platform floating in space, with no walls or ceiling. Overhead, cylindrical satellites orbit a distant gray dwarf sun.
He believes strongly that the Bobs should limit interactions with biological life forms like the Humans, Pavs, and Deltans, because the Bobs waste a lot of time slowing their frame rate to interact with the biologicals.
At the start of the search for Bender, Hugh is involved remotely and uses the Skippies’ matrioshka brain, called JOVAH, to analyze the Quinlan language and culture, and to orchestrate and analyze the scans of the Heaven’s River topopolis. Later, when he realizes that the megastructure is being controlled by a powerful artificial intelligence, he transports himself into a new matrix in the cargo hold of Bob's HEAVEN vessel, so that he can directly pilot a manny. Although Hugh hides his motives from Bob, his goal is to make contact with the AI in the hopes of advancing the singularity project to acheive true artificial intelligence. He eventually negotiates a mutually beneficial exchange of technology with Anek, the Quinlan AI.
