The Pan-Galactic Federation is a union of 114 civilizations across more than 8,000 worlds. It was founded by six races who signed a charter.
The central system is located seven light years from Sagittarius A* at the center of the galaxy.
The Federation evacuated its entire population by flying empty ships toward the Large Magellanic Cloud, then replicating every citizen’s mind into computer form, which they then beamed to the ships in transit. Upon arrival on board the ships, each citizen was rematerialized just like a transporter in Star Trek.
Each federation year is 1.72 Earth years. When Icarus and Daedalus arrive at the center of the federation in 2245, it is Federation Year 12,902. That means that the Federation was founded somewhere around the Earth year 10,000 BCE.
The capital planet has not responded to queries from the sentry post that Ick ad Dae dub the DMZ in 2104 Earth years since 2358, putting the estimated date of the PGF exodus at approximately the year 254 CE.
Wormhole Network[]
The Federation’s network of wormholes spans one third of the galaxy. Each system has a pair of wormholes, except the last system in the chain, which has only one wormhole connecting it to the network. It has dozens of hub systems that each have hundreds of wormholes. In the first hub system Icarus and Daedalus discover, there are 342 wormholes to other systems. One of those wormholes leads to another hub system. The hubs are located at seven degree intervals around the galaxy. Ick and Dae make eight hub hops, leading them down the Orion spur and onto the Perseus arm. The eighth hub (which they name Hub Zero) has 1000 wormholes, one of which leads to the capital system.
This wormhole has a midway point with a security station manned by AMI sentries. They use a tractor beam to take Ick and Dae captive, along with Gunther, a probe from Centaurvania. They manage to communicate with the sentries using pictograms and negotiate the release of all three probes on the condition they return through the wormhole they came through. After escorting Gunther home, the visit planet Roanoke, where they study enough of the native language to communicate with the wormhole sentries. They arrive at the Federation capital and query the Archivist to learn the fate of the Federation and its inhabitants.
