SCUT ("Subspace Communications Universal Transceiver") is a system for instantaneous communication over interstellar distances of up to 25 light years, using subspace to bypass the usual limits of relativity.
SCUT relays (usually deep space stations) can be networked together, greatly extending the effective reach of communications between both settled planets and and enroute vessel in range of such a relay station. SCUT's bandwidth is sufficient for both capable audio and voice communications, virtual reality, and even large file transfers including full backup copies of replicants (though the method is not without risk if the transmission is interrupted.)
History[]
SCUT was invented by Bill and Garfield in the Epsilon Eridani "Skunk Works" facility as an outgrowth of SUDDAR. The initial inspiration for the concepts stems from the original construction of Bill's Heaven-3 vessel in July 2145. During the initial shake-down cruise Bill found that the installed SUDDAR emitter was defective. While the unit had to be replaced, the defect seemed to result in a much longer range return signal that was usual, and inspired Bill to remain in Epsilon Eridani to investigate developing SUDDAR technology further. Garfield first used the SCUT to surprise Bill by popping into his VR simulation at a distance that had previously been impossible with the 6 light-minute delay.
Wide adoption of SCUT was however limited by the speed of light as the technical plans for each Bob to create their own SCUT had to be transmitted over traditional radio frequencies, propagating outwards from Epsilon Eridani. A first-time user of SCUT would receive login instructions and register themselves as a user of the system. Upon contacting Bill, a hazing ritual was established where Bill would pop into their VR, shocking them at the capability of the system.
