Vern has mined 82 Eridani, to prepare for the future arrival of colony ships. He leaves several million tons of assorted elements bundled up with a homing beacon in the L4 Lagrange point of one of the habitable planets. When Hal, Isaac, Owen, and Jack arrive in the system with the first colonists, the raw materials are waiting for them to build an autofactory and begin production.
